The late Yvonne Vera, author of outstanding literary works including
The Stone Virgins has just been awarded the 2006 Aidoo/Snyder Prize – an initiative of the US African Studies Association to recognise the outstanding contributions of Ama Ata Aidoo and Margaret Snyder to the study of African women, and to showcase work that prioritises the experiences of African women. In addition, The Stone Virgins has won the first African Studies Award for literature by women in Africa.

On 20th November 2004, Vera won the Tucholsky Prize, awarded by Swedish Pen. The prize was received on her behalf in Stockholm by Professor Terence Ranger.
Vera died on 7 April 2005.
