The Terrace Builders of Nyanga

Robert Soper

Over the last century, the stone ruins of the Nyanga area of eastern Zimbabwe have engendered much fanciful speculation that has slowly given way to good archaeological research, most recently with this valuable book. The ruins represent the remains of family homesteads and extensive stone-built agricultural terraces. Successive stages of development have been traced from around AD 1300, which grew over five centuries to cover over 5000 square kms. These show how the early farming community learned how to exploit the varied environments of the region to develop a specialised agricultural system integrating cultivation and livestock.
