Danai Gurira was born in the United States to Zimbabwean parents and raised in Zimbabwe attended the Dominican Convent in Harare where she developed an interest in drama. She appeared as Juliet in Romeo and Juliet and Ruby in King Hedley II. Danai is the co-writer and perfomer of In the Continuum a play that has received several awards, including the 2006 John Gasner Outer Critics Award for the best new American friends of the United Nations. In 2006, Danai won an OBIE Award and has been honoured by the Theatre Hall of Fame. In 2007, she won the Helen Hayes Award for Best Actress in In the Continuum which was published by Weaver Press as part of a four play collection, In the Continuum and Other Plays. Danai starred in the Indie Hit film The Visitor, receiving the Best Supporting Actress Award from the Method Fest for this performance. Danai’s newest play, Eclipsed.
