McCreery, Kathleen

Kathleen McCreeryPlaywright Kathleen McCreery first came to Zimbabwe in 1989 when she and Charles Mungoshi were chosen for a writers’ exchange award. Kathleen returned in 1996 to work with Albert Nyathi and his company, and to direct Wole Soyinka’s The Trials of Brother Jero for Rooftop Productions at Theatre in the Park. She has gone on to make plays with Street Child Africa in Ghana, with an international HIV project in Lesotho, and at drama festivals in Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth. Canadian born and educated at the University of Minnesota, Kathleen acted in Vienna and Berlin, and was a founder member of Red Ladder and Broadside theatre companies in London. Co-author of the book Theatre as a Weapon (1986), she has written and collaborated on many scripts, ranging from street theatre to classic adaptations. Her production Flight Paths toured 95 schools and community venues. McCreery has lectured at universities and colleges in the UK and facilitated many workshops and projects for young people and community groups. She gained a Diploma in Counselling in 2006 and currently works as a counsellor with children and young people at Streetwise and Walker Technology College in Newcastle.  Her play When I Met My Mother appears in the collection: In the Continuum and Other Plays.
